Dark Sky Monitoring in a “Hazy” Future – A conversation about a new pollution source – and guess what.. It isn’t light pollution.
April 25 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Localized light pollution has long been the primary threat to our night skies. However, a changing climate, forest management, and the resultant wildfires recently experienced throughout the west have highlighted another regional threat to night skies – smoke. Wildfire smoke from sources sometimes hundreds of miles foretell a future of distorted readings, modified measurement timing, and a potential shift in astro-tourism. Our panel will present on a variety of ways wildfires have, and will continue to affect night skies and what adjustments may be needed in a hazy future.
